The
Motor City Mile is an annual event sponsored by Different Strokes Swim
Shop held on Belle Isle Beach in Detroit, Michigan every July.
Events range from a 5k to a 1 mile to a 1/2 mile swim with all
proceeds donated to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
This
foundation
was established in 1997 by one of the world's best cyclists, Lance
Armstrong. At age 25, Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular
cancer that spread to his lungs, abdomen and brain. Before
knowing his own outcome, Armstrong established the foundation to
educate, inform and support other victims and their families.
The
LAF focuses its time and efforts to support services and groundbreaking
survivorship programs as well as medical and scientific research
grants. Since becoming cancer-free, Armstrong has gone on to win
the Tour De France seven consecutive times
Ten years ago the Motor
City Mile started with 30 participants. By 2008, there were over
500 participants, 150 volunteers and another 800 spectators. It
is a unique event showcasing the city of Detroit while supporting a
great cause!
